The preliminary tournaments are now complete. I umpired several games at the Nor Cal championships, including the Championship game between Oakland North/South and Evergreen. In that game, Oakland won, which precipitated a second game between these same two teams, and Oakland won again, which sent them to the Western Regional tournament.
The Jr Western Region was hosted by my home district - District 12 - in San Jose. As a result, the home league - Cambrian Park - was able to enter their team in this tournament, and they were amazing, just falling short to the eventual Regional Champions from Encinitas LL.
So, now it's on to Taylor MI, where teams from five US and six International regions will be arriving this week. In addition, there are 11 umpires from around the US, plus one from Canada and one from Venezuela - 13 in all, who will also be arriving late this week.
I am busy getting all my gear together, polishing my shoes, making sure i don't forget anything. Many people have asked me if i'll be going back to the World Series - to which I can only reply, 'nope, it's a once in a lifetime experience'!
I leave on Friday for Taylor, where I'll meet the tournament officials and the rest of the umpire crew. I have talked to several veteran umpires who have been to Taylor, and they all tell me that it is a wonderful experience and I'll have the time of my life - I can't wait!
